Touring car racer Paul O’Neill will make his Carrera Cup debut when he competes in the Oulton Park rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB on 13/14 May.
O’Neill has been invited to race the new Type 997 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car entered by Porsche Cars GB in association with Vertu, the worlds first and only manufacturer of luxury handcrafted mobile telephones, as he works towards securing a full-time return to the BTCC. It will be his first race since the end of 2003 and O’Neill is elated at the opportunity to make a return to racing at his home track.
“It’s the best news I’ve had for the last three years,” said the Liverpool-based racer. “I really can’t believe it! All of a sudden I got this phone call and I’m just so happy. I’m over the moon to get back out on the track and I’m massively grateful to everyone at Porsche Cars GB for the chance. My aim is to just go out there and enjoy it.”
O’Neill rose to prominence with a factory-supported BTCC drive and scored an emotional debut victory at Oulton Park in the series. In more recent times he has had to come to terms with diabetes, but quickly worked back to full fitness. “I’m probably fitter now than I’ve ever been and I want to show that diabetes is not a hindrance to competing in motorsport. You cant let diabetes take over your life, and I still think I can get back into the BTCC.”
“It’s a chance to remind people I’m still about and I just want to put my name out there. The BTCC paddock feels like home and Oulton Park is like a part of my family.”
